What is Biogas?

Biogas Production Process

The typical process of biogas production involves the following main steps:

Pre-Treatment: The raw material undergoes size reduction and removal of non-biodegradable contaminants to enhance digestibility.

Fermentation: The pre-treated waste is fed into anaerobic digesters where microorganisms break down the organic matter in the absence of oxygen to produce biogas.

Gas collection and storage: Biogas released is collected in gasholders for storage. Moisture and other impurities are removed to purify the gas.

End Products: Digested waste left after degradation is used as manure while biogas can be used for cooking, lighting, power generation or compressed for use as vehicle fuel.

Maintenance: Regular maintenance of digesters, cleaning and removal of scum and sediments ensures smooth functioning of the plant.
